Most breads are made of flour, grains, water, yeast, salt, and sugar or sweeteners, which are all vegan or plant-based ingredients. This means that a wide range of breads can be enjoyed as part of a plant-based or vegan diet. These include sandwich bread, pita and flatbreads, ciabatta, sourdough, rye bread, French baguettes, pumpernickel, focaccia, tortillas, bagels, rolls, and English muffins.
Caveat – always check the labels, as shop-bought breads and packet mixes may not be labelled vegan, as many are made in environments where animal products are present. This may include products such as eggs, milk, butter, cream, whey, casein/caseinate (milk protein), and honey. Also, look out for animal-derived flavour enhancers (L-cysteine), emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides), enzymes, and breads containing ‘enriched white flour’ which can contain animal products.
